NCCIA inquiry targets easypaisa misleading claims

The easypaisa inquiry has drawn attention after the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency opened proceedings over alleged misleading content circulating on social media and digital platforms. The complaint says the material, spread over the past two weeks, targeted easypaisa bank limited and created unnecessary concern among users.

According to the filing submitted by Mr Naresh Kumar Aruwani, Head of Country Litigation at easypaisa bank limited, the posts were aimed at undermining public confidence in the bank. The complaint seeks legal action against individuals accused of creating and amplifying claims that were described as false and misleading.

Sources say the inquiry has now been assigned to a senior officer at NCCIA, who has started work under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016. The process is expected to identify those involved in producing and sharing the disputed content, particularly material that allegedly exaggerated concerns about the bank’s financial position and operational continuity.

In response, easypaisa bank limited has rejected the allegations and called the claims fake news, saying its services remain fully operational and customer funds are secure. The bank said that while some digital services experienced temporary technical disruptions during the period in question, the issue was operational in nature, quickly resolved, and did not affect deposits or financial stability.

Mr Aruwani stated that the deliberate spread of false information against a regulated financial institution can harm not only the bank itself but also confidence in Pakistan’s wider banking system. He expressed confidence that the relevant authorities would take appropriate legal action.

As Pakistan’s first mobile wallet launched in 2008 and now a leading digital bank regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan, easypaisa says it continues to serve more than 60 million registered users nationwide. The bank has urged customers to depend only on official statements and verified regulatory updates while it pursues legal remedies against misinformation.
