Pakistan Russia counterterrorism talks focus on Afghanistan

The counterterrorism talks between Pakistan and Russia took place in Islamabad on 23 June 2026 during the 12th meeting of the Pakistan-Russia Joint Working Group to Counter International Terrorism. Additional Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Muhammad Khalid Khan Jamali, and Russian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Dmitry Lyubinsky led the dialogue.

Officials discussed the evolving regional terrorist threat with particular attention on terrorism emanating from Afghanistan and the risks it poses to neighbouring countries as well as the wider security environment in the region. The exchange reflected both sides’ concern over developments that continue to challenge peace and stability in South and Central Asia.

The two delegations also reviewed the current state of bilateral counterterrorism cooperation and explored practical avenues for deeper coordination. The counterterrorism talks further underlined the importance of greater engagement at regional and international platforms, especially the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, where Pakistan and Russia can continue to align their efforts against shared security threats.
