Heed PTA Warning on Misinformation Online
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has instructed social media users to refrain from producing, publishing or transmitting any illegal, hateful, defamatory or misleading content. The PTA warning calls for immediate removal of such material and asks users to avoid taking part in narratives or campaigns that could harm national integrity or tarnish the reputation of state institutions and private individuals.
Under PECA 2016, Section 20, deliberately spreading false information that damages a person’s reputation or breaches their privacy is a punishable offence. The authority emphasises that content in violation of this provision must be taken down without delay and may lead to criminal proceedings.
The PTA warning frames responsible digital behaviour as a collective national responsibility. Users are urged to verify information before sharing, to refrain from amplifying harmful messages, and to comply with takedown requests to avoid legal consequences.
The authority also warned that enforcement will be impartial and that legal action will be taken against offenders regardless of affiliation. Those who receive complaints or notices are advised to remove disputed content promptly and seek appropriate guidance where needed.
