Key Decisions from PRA General Body Meeting 2025

The Parliamentary Reporters Association (PRA) of Pakistan held a significant General Body meeting in Islamabad, chaired by President Usman Khan, where several key decisions were made to strengthen the organization and address pressing issues affecting journalists.
During the session, it was announced that the longstanding ban on collecting funds for the welfare of PRA members has been formally lifted. This move, approved by an overwhelming majority in a vote attended by 106 members, aims to enhance the association’s ability to support its members and expand its activities.
The meeting authorized the PRA body to form a five-member election committee ahead of the next organizational elections. However, the election committee will not have the authority to review or alter decisions made by the governing body. To maintain their voting rights, members were also given a deadline to pay their outstanding dues.
President Usman Khan presented a comprehensive report on PRA’s performance over the past two years, highlighting major achievements, committee work, advocacy for press freedom, and the association’s clear stance on key issues. The report, as well as the training activities and organizational growth, received praise from the participants.
Throughout the meeting, leadership responded openly and respectfully to tough questions from members, reiterating the commitment to organizational principles and the ongoing struggle for journalists’ rights. President Usman Khan emphasized that the fight for press freedom and journalists’ welfare would continue with renewed strength and unity, urging future leadership to uphold values of mutual respect and cooperation.
Resolutions were unanimously passed to express solidarity with journalists killed in Gaza, voice concerns over the PECA Amendment Act, and condemn delayed salaries and dismissals of media workers. The assembly also called for greater enforcement of press freedom and constitutional rule in Pakistan.
A particularly strong condemnation was voiced against police misconduct toward PRA member Tariq Work and threats against journalists, as well as the registration of cases against senior journalists under the cybercrime law. The forum demanded an immediate end to these cases and action against the responsible authorities.
Concerns were also raised about a theft at senior PRA member Shehryar Khan’s home and the reported lack of police cooperation, prompting calls for swift intervention from the Ministry of Interior and Islamabad police officials.
Following debate, amendments to the PRA Constitution were approved, including the requirement that elected PRA bodies must form all committees within one month and present quarterly performance reports. Work to revise PRA rules will also begin immediately.
The scrutiny of voter lists emerged as a topic of concern. To address this, it was decided that every new PRA body will complete the scrutiny and registration of new members within six months, and a dedicated committee will be established for this purpose.
The finance secretary presented the financial report, which was endorsed by the members. The achievements in expanding the PRA’s organizational structure, establishing various specialized committees, and digitalizing processes were highlighted as significant steps forward.
The meeting also paid tribute to the National Assembly Speaker, Senate Chairman, and media officials for their support, as well as to senior PRA members for their dedication and input. The active participation of 106 members was seen as a sign of strong commitment to the PRA and trust in its leadership.
Numerous senior journalists contributed their insights, feedback, and questions on the PRA’s progress over the past two years, reflecting robust engagement within the association. The PRA expressed gratitude for the members’ participation and the constructive spirit displayed throughout the meeting.
