Medical Education CPD System in Pakistan Develops

Pakistan to Launch Global-Standard Continuing Professional Development System in Medical Education
Pakistan is poised to revolutionize its medical education landscape through the implementation of a comprehensive, globally recognized Continuing Professional Development (CPD) system. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC), in collaboration with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) based in Chicago, has embarked on a strategic initiative to develop a regulatory framework that aligns with international best practices. This effort aims to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery, elevate medical standards, and improve professional mobility and employability for healthcare professionals across Pakistan.
A significant milestone in this journey was marked by a high-level delegation from the ACCME visiting the PM&DC headquarters in Islamabad. Over a two-and-a-half-day period, leading institution representatives engaged in intensive strategy sessions focusing on designing a future-ready CPD regulatory system. The discussions covered global trends, evolving healthcare education standards, and best practices for establishing a robust, evidence-based CPD framework. The sessions were facilitated by prominent figures including Dr. Rizwan Taj, President of the PM&DC; Dr. Graham McMahon, President and CEO of ACCME; and Dr. Dion Richetti, Vice President of Accreditation at ACCME. The collaborative dialogue brought together rich insights from both local and international perspectives to tailor a suitable model for Pakistan.
The initiative received support from key government officials as well. The PM&DC leadership held bilateral meetings with Syed Mustafa Kamal, Minister of National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination, along with other senior officials in Islamabad. The Minister expressed strong backing for the project, emphasizing its potential to strengthen medical services nationwide and align Pakistan’s healthcare standards with global benchmarks. The government’s endorsement underscores the strategic importance of integrating international best practices into Pakistan’s health system.
The new CPD system aims to dramatically improve the quality of patient care by ensuring healthcare professionals remain competent, updated, and patient-focused throughout their careers. Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj, President of the PM&DC, highlighted that this initiative would lead to better patient outcomes, increase public trust, and support Pakistan’s medical workforce in gaining regional and international recognition. The framework will also bolster the mobility and employability of Pakistani healthcare professionals, facilitating greater opportunities within the global medical community.
Expressing confidence in the transformative potential of this project, Prof. Dr. Taj reaffirmed PM&DC’s commitment to developing a nationally integrated CPD system. He emphasized that the partnership with ACCME and various national and international stakeholders would foster a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and excellence in healthcare delivery across Pakistan. The initiative represents a major step towards modernizing medical education, elevating professional standards, and ensuring that Pakistan’s healthcare sector remains competitive and compliant with international benchmarks.
